Frank Lazzaro has been in the
San Diego area since 1986, where he
has studied African and Middle Eastern
drumming extensively. He has performed
with several dancers and groups,
including "Urban Vibrations" featuring
dancers Meleah and Desiree in the mid-nineties, and more recently "Damaru." This world beat fusion group derives their influences from African drumming traditions, as well as the rhythms of middle eastern dance. Damaru has made regular appearances at the San Diego Street Scene and has a self-titled CD.
Frank teaches dumbek in both group and private settings, and regularly drums for bellydance classes. He also has an instructional CD available for students of middle eastern drumming and dance. Frank has performed annually at MECDA's Cairo Carnival and is a member of SAMEDA. He is active in the San Diego dance scene, and produces monthly shows at Claire De Lune in North Park, featuring live music and dancers. Here he has accompanied John Bilezikjian, Dave Dhillon, and other great musicians, in these exciting and successful showcases. Frank plays regularly with "Middle-Earth" as their lead drummer, and the group has released 3 CDs of mid-east fusion music suitable for belly dancing. Frank is also featured on IAMED's video production of "Hollywood Babylon", and performed at the Bellydance Superstars' recent stops in San Diego. Frank has studied and hosted workshops with master arabic tabla player Issam Houshan of Bellydance Superstars over the past few years.
Frank's current collaborations with tribal fusion instructor and performer Sabrina Fox have inspired the development of a new student percussion performance group, "Cairo Beats". He also makes yearly trips to Maui, where he is involved in the vibrant dance community there. Frank can always be found at local events, supporting the music and dance with his enthusiastic spirit. He is available for performances, workshops, and has CDs and drums available.
